Before the current escalation of violence and mass displacement, the situation for children in Afghanistan was already dire – due to the ongoing conflict, drought and the knock-on effects of COVID-19. Now we're seeing even more children going hungry, and thousands of more children living outside in the open without food or medicine. Many have been wounded or killed. Since the beginning of June, more than 80,000 children have been forced to leave their homes. Save the Children has been supporting children and families in Afghanistan for almost 50 years – through periods of increased conflict, political instability and climate-related disasters. When the current conflict started to escalate, Save the Children teams got to work immediately, assessing the needs of displaced families in order to provide them with necessary items such as clothes for children, blankets, and household items. For now, Save the Children have had to temporarily suspend services across the country due to the insecure situation. They remain committed to staying and delivering their life-saving work and will resume activities as soon as it is safe to do so. Flexible funding is needed urgently to help children in Afghanistan and other crises around the world whose lives and futures are at risk.
