About campaign
Known as the ‘rainforests of the sea’, coral reefs are one of the most productive ecosystems in existence. Whilst covering >1% of our oceans, they support around 25% of all marine life and provide income for over half a billion people. But they are under threat and experts warn that 90% may disappear by 2050 Corals are colonies of soft-bodied animals called polyps that gain most of their energy from a type of algae that lives inside their tissues and undergoes photosynthesis. This algae is what gives coral their colour. Colonies of hard corals form the foundation of the coral reef ecosystem, which are found in equatorial regions. Coral reefs have some of the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem on the planet— possibly even more than 5 tropical rainforest! However, they face many threats and experts warn that 90% could disappear by 2050. The biggest threat is the warming of our oceans – which causes coral bleaching. Bleaching refers to the coral becoming ‘stressed’ and subsequently expelling the algae. Without the algae, they lose their primary source of nutrition and likely die. Global coral bleaching events have already contributed to around 50% loss of our coral reefs. This year scientists have predicted another global bleaching event hitting our reefs. We currently operate several reef restoration projects across the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions and with your help, can prepare for, and take care of, the corals as they face yet another upcoming bleaching event!
