About campaign
This year’s Earth Day (22nd April) theme is “Invest in Our Planet”. By supporting SEED Madagascar’s environmental conservation work in Southern Madagascar, you enable investment in one of the richest, yet most endangered, ecosystems on the planet. SEED’s conservation work in the Sainte Luce area will strengthen the local forest ecosystem, in turn protecting habitat for many species of flora and fauna, as well as assisting with localized climate mitigation. Southern is home to four endangered species of lemur, all of which are threatened due to deforestation and other indirect impacts of climate change in the region. SEED Madagascar are creating habitat corridors that are protected from unsustainable land-use patterns such as mining, reconnecting lemur habitat, significantly expanding their territories, and encouraging genetic diversity within the species which is vital for healthy populations to be sustained. Our aim is to reforest four habitat corridors between five isolated forest fragments, reconnecting stable lemur habitat and significantly increasing the fully connected forest habitat by 58 hectares. Providing habitat drastically changes the chances lemur species have, as well as enabling a resource for local communities and establishing a stronger forest ecosystem. In the last 18 months, due to the food crisis, support for our conservation projects has greatly decreased as donors have prioritized the emergency response. However, the livelihoods of the communities affected greatly rely upon a healthy ecosystem, and as such the conservation projects play a key role in the long-term survival of both people and lemurs in southeast Madagascar.
