On December 16th, 2021 Super Typhoon Rai (locally called Odette) slammed into the Philippines with sustained maximum
winds of 195 and gusts of up to 260 km/hr. A total of nine landfalls left significant devastation with the most severely impacted areas being the coastal communities of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Island, Southern Leyte, Bohol, and Cebu peace, security, and women’s empowerment within the volatile BARMM region.
Amidst the COVID19 pandemic, the Philippines is not exempted from the devastating experience of disasters and emergencies brought by Typhoons. The country was hit by another destructive super typhoon on December 16, 2021, which is said to
be the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, Super Typhoon Odette (Rai - International Name) had a strength of 270 km/h that caused region-wide destruction of homes and livelihood and even took lives from the provinces of
Visayas and Mindanao regions
These are just some of the reasons why birth complications and maternal deaths may increase as well cases of violence
against the most vulnerable women and girls in the community during these emergency situations.
