About campaign
Litter4Tokens & Trash4tokens has prevented more than 624,000 bags of litter from reaching the ocean (~1.3 million lbs of plastic), feeding more than 156,000 people in remote communities across South Africa! Litter4Tokens has performed educational outreach to schools and individuals (5500 children across South Africa per month). The campaign not only empowers, but educates, feeds and gives drinkable clean water to children as well as families by not just giving handouts. We are the preventative campaign, you can do as many BEACH clean ups as you want but if you don't get to the route of the problem, educating and cleaning up before the litter reaches the environment and waterways we shall be chasing our tails forever. Trash4Tokens USA & Mexico works with communities, schools, shopping centers, and residential estates to prevent recyclable waste from entering the environment. Waste pickers and community schools collect recyclable waste from their community and deposit their bags of collected trash to a T4T center. In exchange for each bag, they receive a token which can be spent on clothes, food and other household essentials. Litter4tokens is the sister foundation in South Africa and was launched in 2015. Clare Swithenbank-Bowman the Founder and CEO of Litter4tokens launched the USA and Mexico version calling it Trash4tokens as she aims to help clean up and prevent 1000 of tons of ocean bound waste while feeding and empowering communities in need. T4T is simultaneously preventing thousands of tons of waste reaching the oceans, cleaning up communities and providing resources for those who need it. Each new T4T center will be accompanied by educational support for the community about the importance of recycling and collecting waste. Sea Hugger helps fund our Trash4tokens Campaign in Mexico Punta Mita so we can collect 100 of bags each week and preventing the trash from reaching the environment at the same time feeding and empowering the local community.
