Since January 2021, we have been responding to a severe food insecurity crisis in Madagascar’s Anosy region, which is currently affecting more than 1.5 million people and is predicted to soon threaten 500,000 children with malnutrition.
Over the last year, SEED has been delivering emergency food, nutrition education, malnutrition treatment, and water, hygiene, and sanitation information sessions across 41 of the villages worst affected by food shortages in Madagascar’s Anosy region. Through this, we have managed to support 921 children who have been diagnosed with malnutrition, together with 5526 of their family members, leading to an almost 100% recovery rate in cases of children with malnutrition diagnoses.
With the prospect of this crisis worsening further, not only must we continue supporting communities who need urgent food assistance, but we now must also take steps to ensure that in the future, when and sadly not if, the effects of climate change impact Madagascar’s food systems and livelihoods again, communities are better prepared to support themselves and their families.
This is where SEED’s new Recovery and Resilience project comes in. As well as continuing to provide an immediate response for those affected by famine in Madagascar’s south, this new appeal seeks to increase support for longer-term recovery and resilience livelihood programmes, which will be critical in the coming months as communities move towards recovery. SEED’s sustainable livelihoods and food security programming enable people in food-insecure communities to increase their nutritional and financial resilience. These programmes will ensure that even during the most severe droughts, communities will be able to feed their families and earn an income.
In Madagascar there is a saying, ‘aleo misoroka toy izay mitsabo’ which means it is better to prevent than to cure - that is what our ‘Recovery and Resilience’ appeal is all about.
